Club

Our Men’s Open team has officially been accepted into the American Premier Soccer League (APSL) Mitten Conference, a regional semi-professional competition that is expanding into Michigan.

What the APSL Is

The American Premier Soccer League is an amateur and semi-professional competition that operates under the structure of the United States Adult Soccer Association and forms part of the broader U.S. soccer pyramid. The league began in 2020 and includes clubs across several regional conferences throughout the eastern United States. The APSL was created to provide competitive environments for ambitious amateur and semi-professional clubs that want a higher standard of competition and a pathway to national tournaments.

Leagues like APSL help bridge the gap between local amateur soccer and higher-level national competition. For players, this level often includes: former college athletes, current college players during the offseason, experienced adult players, young players looking to reach the next level. It creates an environment where the intensity, organization, and expectations are higher than typical local leagues.

What It Takes to Be Accepted into a League Like APSL

Joining a league such as APSL is not automatic. Clubs must demonstrate that they are serious, organized, and capable of operating at a higher level.

Typical requirements include:

Club structure
  • Stable club leadership and organization

  • Clear team management and coaching staff

  • Commitment to operating a competitive adult program

Facilities
  • A consistent home field for matches

  • Adequate field quality and game-day operations

Player Standards
  • A roster capable of competing at a strong regional level

  • Players with college, academy, or high-level amateur experience

League commitment
  • Ability to travel for away matches

  • Commitment to league rules, scheduling, and competition standards

Leagues like APSL aim to create strong regional competition between serious clubs. Being accepted means a club has shown it can operate responsibly and contribute to the level of the league.

What This Means for the Men’s Team

For our Men’s Open team, this move raises the standard. The level of competition increases, training expectations increase and game preparation becomes more serious. Players will now compete against experienced adult teams from across the region, many of which include players with college or high-level amateur backgrounds. This environment helps players continue developing after youth and college soccer. It also creates a clear identity for the team: representing Hoverla at the senior level of the club. The goal is not simply to participate. The goal is to compete, improve, and represent the club with pride.

What This Means for the Future of Hoverla Youth Players

One of the most important benefits of this step is the pathway it creates for our academy. Young players need to see what comes next. For many youth clubs, that path ends at U18. With a men’s team competing in a strong adult league, our players can now see a full progression within the same club: youth academy, high school development, men’s team competition. This structure is common in many European clubs. Players grow within the same club environment and eventually compete for the senior team. It creates motivation for younger players and strengthens the identity of the club. They are not just playing for their youth team. They are part of a long-term club structure.

Building Something Long-Term

Hoverla F.C. started with youth development. Now the club continues expanding step by step. Adding a competitive men’s team at the APSL level strengthens the entire club structure. It brings: higher standards, stronger competition, and long-term pathways for players. Most importantly, it connects every level of the club. Our youngest players can now look at the first team and see where their journey could lead.
